Writing Assignment #3 Megan Scherer The main focus of the reading was that Noise can cause a violent uprising against a governmental power or authority in general. That would be a single sentence summary, when this piece of literature is much more than a single sentence. The one thing that stood out to me the most was this quote "We attempt, through our aesthetics and our fierce commitment to politics of joy and desire, to create a space of carnival, where all rules are broken and anything is possible. We seek to dissolve all barriers between art and politics, participants and spectators, dream and action". Continuing on with the essay the author described being in a big crowd, in the rain, knowing that being a part of this crowd, he was making history. It was a peaceful march, filled with breaks, snacks, starbucks, and even music. You can always make a difference without interfering violently, causing harm or disturbance to others, on top of knowing when to keep to yourself...

Journal Walk #6 Megan Scherer This assignment was way too fun. After reading some of the examples I realized I’m way too loud, and way too expressive to try to hide away till someone realized. My family is filled with big personalities. So, I went with something subtle, while expressing how I feel. Yesterday I had a graduation party with my family, extended family, as well as friends. I also am a person who folds in on themselves when they get gifts. I was luckily enough to receive congrats from my family, to the point where I felt like I had a silver spoon in my mouth. “Silver Spoon” is a phrase that’s used to describe someone who was born into a wealthy or privileged family. For this project, I leaned into that. To see if my family had enough time and patience to notice, see if I could make this stand out in a day to day setting, and challenge myself to be reined in by a silver spoon. Also... I couldn't help myself, one of my dogs name is Spoon, so this was also dedicated to havi...

Journal walk 5 Megan Scherer For this walk I chose to walk for my sister. She is a professional dog person, aka dog walker. Her and my mom own a company that helps dogs get out of the house when owners can’t. She loves her job, but what she loves even more is her dogs. Moose, Tucker, and Finley. These dogs are her pride and joy, so her favorite walk’s include taking them around town. For this walk I chose to take my mom, since my sister walks with her all the time. These were some questions I asked to gauge how this walk would end up. Emily walk questions What do you enjoy most about walking with your dogs? Making them happy. Seeing them get excited What do you look for in a good walk? Nice weather Well behaved dogs (usually) Do you have a favorite walking path? ...

Project #1 Megan Scherer Where do I go? Is a piece I made about the strange things we do in a dream. How we wake up in strange places, and cant quite tell if we are having a dream or not. Using the land around me I collected flowers to float a bouquet down the river. The reason I chose this river, is due to it not being seen as pretty, or clean as a water source. Flowers in this situation can refer to ephemeral beauty not being able to be kept. The environment allowing me to sit with the beauty for a while before returning it back to its rightful owner. Overall, dreaming and beauty doesn't last, and does not belong to us.

Writing #2 Megan Scherer I chose to read "No Dead Air! iPod and the Culture of Mobile Listening" by Michael Bull. This informative essay is about how the iPod changed the game when it came to feeling good in public while creating your own space in public. To break it down the iPod gave people control over their mood through music, their choice to change the mood based off the tune. On top of listening to their own music in public without playing something out loud to cause attention and break the personal space in solitude. Therefore, lending people to create space for themselves in public with the solitude and choice in their music preference One thing I wanted to point out was this quote "What reigns there is actuality, the urgency of the present moment. Since non-places are there to be passed through, they are measured i...

Journal Walk #4 Megan Scherer So, for this walk I started off with my sunglasses on, and sound canceling headphones on. I wasn't listening to anything because I just wanted to think about what I was seeing. The first thing I noticed was that it felt like I was self isolating. Looking through the lense of my sunglasses, I noticed that nothing was its true color because of the dark blue tint on my sunglasses. This sparked an idea, how could I photograph with my sunglasses on as well as without. I continued on with my cocoon walk, until I had to turn around. When I turned back I returned to every spot I previously walked to and made mental notes of what it looked like without sunglasses. On my way back when I was fully unplugged. I received lots of "good morning", smiles, and waves by people on their morning stroll, or just fishing. I also realized that the river is way louder than I originally gave it cr...

Journal Walk #3 Megan Scherer Alright, I struggled with this mapping progress because of the constant rush of social meaning/structures being put on the places I live. I decided to take a step back to see what people around me invested in through social meanings and social situations placed on them. What better to do than go to my roots of watching people around me. Drinking. I grew up in a town that revolved around social gatherings to drink. I decided to take a walk through downtown, its a hustle and bustle place. Small coffee shops, little boutiques, a walk next to the river, and parks everywhere. Now, lets look at this place through a lense of a social drinking town. There is a bar every other block downtown, parks everywhere which makes it easy for teens to drink at night, and liquor stores at almost every cross road outside of the down town area. Its really really easy to sneak between bar locations to take a shot from your pockets, and even easier to wal...

Writing 1 Megan Scherer In reading 2: Walking the Line, by Laurene Vaughan. She makes statements about walking becoming a key part in exploring and creating a landscape for the body (aka. you the person walking through that space). She says this "walking enables a personal narrative of the body moving through the space. When considering the practice of walking, we must also consider the tradition of walking as an aesthic and creative practice. Walking is a practice of transitioning, of moving from here to there, or from this to that". She also mentions Henry David Thoreau saying this "For example, Henry David Thoreau spends much of his writing reflecting and illuminating on what we learned from the landscape as we move upon it. Even though we may not literally speak while walking, walking is not a silent act at all. All of the modalities of the body and environment sing a part of the chorus of walking as we shift from step to step: stepping in our through proportions, ...

Journal 2 Desire Lines Megan Scherer Cropland's Desire Lines This series of images is about desire lines found in the Midwest suburbs of Chicago, where I currently reside. It was complicated to find these desire lines in all of this farmland, but I decided it was best to lead into it. Desire lines between crops, from crowds at the local baseball fields, all the way to natural made bike ramps for the local kids, or the muddy fields of the local strawberry festival. It was a fun series of images to connect. I'd like to think of it as a local farm kid's weekend fun. Getting up early to walk through the fields, afternoon baseball, and a fun night time bike ride with friends. I know that this is what I did as a kid, so it felt familiar to re-learn these routines, desire lines, and local lands again. When seeing these images, try to create a story line, and see what makes the story connect.
