Journal Walk #6

Journal Walk #6

Megan Scherer

This assignment was way too fun. After reading some of the examples I realized I’m way too loud, and way too expressive to try to hide away till someone realized. My family is filled with big personalities. So, I went with something subtle, while expressing how I feel. Yesterday I had a graduation party with my family, extended family, as well as friends. I also am a person who folds in on themselves when they get gifts. I was luckily enough to receive congrats from my family, to the point where I felt like I had a silver spoon in my mouth.

“Silver Spoon” is a phrase that’s used to describe someone who was born into a wealthy or privileged family.

For this project, I leaned into that. To see if my family had enough time and patience to notice, see if I could make this stand out in a day to day setting, and challenge myself to be reined in by a silver spoon.

Also... I couldn't help myself, one of my dogs name is Spoon, so this was also dedicated to having him around 24/7.

Here is the video of the day, with photos that are displayed time wise. If you watch the video, the photos will make more sense!

At the end of the day, I really enjoyed this project. Just letting my family and friends call me out on something, on top of preforming, without telling them. I am a blabber mouth when it comes to my family. Walking around public and privates spaces with a spoon in my mouth had fun reactions. When I was at home my sister (who is attentive to everything) noticed after a new minutes. My brother knew something was off. My mothers boyfriend just kept offering me food, while my mother had ZERO clue about the spoon in my mouth. The man at the convenience store was super polite without a need to say anything.
If I was ever going to do this again, I'd push the limit on what I could get away with around my family.

  1. Hi Megan!
I love how unique this idea was and how you tied it to your dog Spoon. Who would have thought having a spoon in your mouth all day would affect it so much. This really mixed up how you interacted with the world around you. Was your dog affected by you having a spoon in your mouth in any way? Overall, amazing post, and I love how you incorporated a video into your post!

  2. Megan,

this was such a creative use of this prompt. I like how you chose something both visually unusual and something that restricted your voice and how it effected your interactions with strangers. I know I would be so confused if someone came into work with a spoon in their mouth not speaking.

  3. Your concept for this walk was so clever! I loved the play on “silver spoon” as both a metaphor and a literal object. It’s such a creative way to reflect on feelings of privilege, gratitude, and self-awareness, especially during a moment like your graduation celebration. That tension you described. Between appreciation and discomfort when receiving gifts or attention, really resonated with me.

It was also such a sweet and funny touch to involve your dog named Spoon! That added this playful layer to an otherwise introspective idea, and I can tell how much thought you put into making the project both personal and performative.
