Journal Walk #4

Megan Scherer

So, for this walk I started off with my sunglasses on, and sound canceling headphones on. I wasn't listening to anything because I just wanted to think about what I was seeing. The first thing I noticed was that it felt like I was self isolating.

Looking through the lense of my sunglasses, I noticed that nothing was its true color because of the dark blue tint on my sunglasses. This sparked an idea, how could I photograph with my sunglasses on as well as without. I continued on with my cocoon walk, until I had to turn around. When I turned back I returned to every spot I previously walked to and made mental notes of what it looked like without sunglasses.

On my way back when I was fully unplugged. I received lots of "good morning", smiles, and waves by people on their morning stroll, or just fishing. I also realized that the river is way louder than I originally gave it credit for. It became a favorite thing to tune into, on top of the birds chirping, and the frogs jumping into the pond.

Overall, I think certain places are needed for cocooning yourself, but its not always needed. Especially, when you are going for a stroll outside, its better to be connected with nature than with your phone.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your post! The way you used your sunglasses in the photos to show the change in how you saw your walk with them was a super creative idea. They really show that shift in color and mood. It makes me rethink how I could have approached photographing my walk, as sunglasses and how they impact what we're seeing is something I didn't even think about. It would be cool to see the photos side-by-side, like the same photo taken with and without the sunglasses, to show the difference between what you could have seen and what you actually saw! That being said, I love how cohesive the photos look next to each other. They look so serene and moody.

  2. I really enjoyed the images in this post; however, I couldn't tell exactly where this scene was. Do you think your interactions would have been different depending on the area, or do you think the positive interactions were only due to you being in the moment without sunglasses or headphones? I must say I am a little jealous of the area you were in for your walk. I feel like anyone would be in a good mood walking in such a beautiful environment, compared to our dry city here in Arizona. Other than that detail, I think you did well exploring this idea of tuning things out.

  3. This really captures the feeling of being in your own world. The contrast between walking with your sunglasses and headphones vs. unplugging was super interesting, especially how it shifted your interactions with people and the environment. It’s a great reminder of how much we miss when we’re disconnected from the world around us.
