Journal walk 5

Megan Scherer

For this walk I chose to walk for my sister. She is a professional dog person, aka dog walker. Her and my mom own a company that helps dogs get out of the house when owners can’t. She loves her job, but what she loves even more is her dogs. Moose, Tucker, and Finley. These dogs are her pride and joy, so her favorite walk’s include taking them around town. For this walk I chose to take my mom, since my sister walks with her all the time. These were some questions I asked to gauge how this walk would end up.

Emily walk questions

What do you enjoy most about walking with your dogs?

           Making them happy.

           Seeing them get excited

What do you look for in a good walk?

            Nice weather

            Well behaved dogs (usually)

Do you have a favorite walking path?

           Umm, actually

Nature trails are fun if the dogs live there

Let the dogs choose(Not when really busy)

Special outfit?

            Fuckin tennis shoes

            Shorts with pockets

How long do you usually walk for?

             30 mins. Depends on weather

              Since it’s too hot it’s 20 mins

Anything in nature you notice more on walks?

              Notice more people and dogs

Two kids (friends) they don’t shut up

                   “Honk for jokes”

                     Cheesy dad jokes

At night or at 7am it’s quiet. Different     type of stillness that causes relaxation

9:30 am everyone is out and it’s not fun       to walk dogs at this time

Anything else I need to know?

Taking them to water because she can join in

Anything I should be scared or worried about?

                  Dog fights

If moose barks then Tucker fights back

During this walk I realized my sister deals with more shit (literally and physically) than I realized. I’m glad I did this, and asked questions before hand. Just to be aware of what she is aware of, to think about what she thinks about on this walk, as well as the conversations she has with my mom while walking dogs. I also dressed as her for this walk, which she was embarrassed about, but I needed to almost literally put myself in her shoes, for my personal learning experience, and also just for fun! Another thing I found myself thinking about a lot was the weather conditions. I’m in the Midwest where it is hot and humid right now. Living in Arizona for the past 5 years allowed me to adapt to dry heat. Here, during this walk, I realized that humidity sucks, and couldn’t believe that my sister and her dogs would even want to walk during this weather, but it’s needed and they enjoy it. Overall, being a dog walker isn’t for the faint of heart.

  1. I truly enjoy reading your posts, as it always feels like a story and is super engaging. Including your interview with your sister about her dog walking really brought the cause of the walk to life. Dressing like her was also such a fun idea. One idea you could do to build upon this could be including more documentation of the environment and how your sister interacts with it. for example: Did you see anything that relates to dog walking? Any dog parks? How did your sister walk? How could this environment make dog walkers feel or the dogs feel? These are trivial things to add but could add more to the storytelling aspect. This being said, this post was such a thoughtful idea for a walk!

  2. I really enjoyed reading your walk journal. It was such a creative and heartfelt approach to step into your sister’s shoes (literally and metaphorically). I love how you framed the walk through both your perspective and hers by asking specific, thoughtful questions ahead of time. That interview-style prep gave your reflection so much depth and personality, especially the quotes like “fuckin tennis shoes” and “Honk for jokes”—they really brought your sister’s character to life.
