Final Project Proposal
Megan Scherer
This project is an extension of the project "Where do I go?" This piece will be an extension of my dreams in the landscape, going through multiple questions about dreams. Where do we go, why do we gain consciousness, why do we forget our dreams? How does our vision change in our dreams and outside of them? This short video exploration of dreams explains in a single viewpoint about this characters dreaming.
I thought long and hard about this and completely fumbled on what to do. I decided that there are tons of different elements that I want to expand on in my first project. I'd like to shoot for 10 mins of film time, as well as add a story line to the film. For example, falling sleep scenes, as well as a story line after the flower cutting. The reason that I want to expand this project, is because I think its a concept worth expanding, on top of being proud of this project, while knowing that it needs to be improved on.
I love this topic because it is ephemeral and creates a perspective (my perspective) on the subject while actively questioning it.
While reading through "Beach Beneath the Street" I had the most interest in the paragraph talking about two kinds of collective belonging. "There are also two kinds of collective belonging. In the first, we belong because we are the same: in the second, we belong because we are not". I am not creatively inspired by the political aspect of this, but what we can find in-between. Where we go when we sleep feels like a big in-between in the two collective belongings. In your dream you have a feeling of belonging but most often than not, it switches, causing the dreamer to wake up or realize they are dreaming. I wanted to focus on this space for my continuation of this project. What causes that moment for the dreamer to realize we are asleep, is it the surrounding people in that dream that causes the dreamer to wake in consciousness. Does a dream have a shape, does the shape depend on the type of dream? Why do we not remember our dreams when we wake up? Why do some of us never dream? These are all questions that have driven me to ask where do we go when we sleep.

I think this extension from project one will be an amazing idea! I truly enjoyed your video from project one and think exploring something similar, but using a wider range of questions based on the dreaming state, would be very interesting. Maybe you could try using blurry visuals or adding layered sounds to show how dreams feel! Overall, this is an amazing idea! I'm excited to see it.
ReplyDeleteYour proposal is so beautifully written, it’s clear how much thought, emotion, and philosophical reflection you’re pouring into this continuation. I really love how you’re approaching the concept of dreams not just as mysterious or abstract, but as a liminal space where questions of identity, memory, and perception all blend together. The connection you made to The Beach Beneath the Street (especially the quote about collective belonging!) is so powerful. That “in-between” space you’re focusing on feels like exactly the kind of territory dreams occupy, where both the familiar and the unfamiliar coexist.
ReplyDeleteThe questions you’re asking, about consciousness, shape, memory, and the role of others in dreams, are rich with creative potential. I think expanding your original “Where do I go?” project into a longer film with more narrative structure sounds like a great way to deepen the impact while keeping the dreamlike quality. I also appreciate that you’re coming from a place of both pride and curiosity, knowing it’s a piece you value, while wanting to push it further.
I'm so excited to see how the visuals evolve, especially with the use of silk or veils, and your continued attention to tone and mood.
Exploring where we go when we dream is a very interesting topic. I think the questions that you have set to answer during these completion of your project are good ones and will help you and others to understand where we go when we dream. The research you’ve done with the video that was posted is a good start and it seems like it can guide you as you complete the project. I look forward to seeing your final project.
